Intarsia {intär´sEu} is
the art of decorating a surface, almost like a mosaic or a
puzzle, to create an inlaid pattern made of wood. The Intarsia is derived from the Latin Verb
'interserere'.
Meaning, "to insert or the process of inlaying
wood". There are no stains used in Intarsia, only a wide variety
of woods for the coloring, and the direction of the grain for design
and texture. Each piece
is sanded to achieve a 3D appearance, then glued to complete a pattern. When it is finished, it
has the look of a painting or a puzzle, from the variety of colors
used.
My inspiration, to start working
with Intarsia, came from the artists Judy
Gale Roberts and Jerry Booher. I started receiving their free
newsletter, "The
Intarsia Times". They currently have over 200 patterns that
you can order. There is also a magazine called "Scroll Saw
Workshop" that I have received since it's recent inception.
My work has been
created from purchased patterns. Most
of the credit has to go to the artists that have created the patterns.
I feel they are the true artists, and I only do interesting things
with wood through their patterns.
